The Treaty of Rome 60 years on - contemporary perspectives

27 March 2017

Dr Laura Polverari was an invited speaker at a round table organised by the Italian Cultural Institute in Edinburgh on 21 March, to mark the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty (more accurately treaties) of Rome, which established the European Economic Community.

This anniversary coincided with an unprecedented crisis in the European project, with many as yet unknown implications.

Expertly chaired by University of Strathclyde’s Professor Philip Cooke, the round table involved Laura Polverari and James Mitchell, Professor of Public Policy at the University of Edinburgh. Topics discussed included the origins and current crisis of the European project, the evolving attitudes towards the EU in Italy and Scotland, the current rise of Euroscepticism, as well as the importance that being part of the EU has had for Italy in terms of socio-economic development and outlook.

For more information, see the website of the Italian Cultural Institute.
