New Publication on Polish regional policy and the influence of the EU

01 January 2003

A new article 'The EU and recent regional reform in Poland', written by Dr. Martin Ferry, has been published in Europe-Asia Studies (Volume 55, Number 7 / November 2003).

The paper explores how the intensification of Poland's accession negotiations with the EU in the late 1990s influenced reforms designed to revitalise regional and local administrative structures and encourage the development of initiatives at regional level. It concludes that the formulation and implementation of the reform package involved a complex process of interaction between EU and domestic pressures, with some areas of convergence alongside areas of conflict or tension.
