EPRC is delighted to welcome David Charles to the Centre as Professor of Regional Economic Development and Policy, a Chair which has been established in EPRC by the University of Strathclyde under its Research Excellence Fund.
David joins EPRC from Curtin University, Perth, where he was dean of research of Curtin Business School. Prior to that David was for many years in the Centre for Urban and Regional Development Studies at Newcastle University before taking up the David Goldman Chair of Business Innovation in the Business School there. In the Business School, he was director of research and alternate head of school for three years, then director of a faculty research institute for policy and practice.
He also established a new research centre on Knowledge, Innovation, Technology and Enterprise (KITE). David has led or been a co-investigator on around 80 projects prior to joining EPRC, funded by the European Commission, UK government, ESRC, OECD and other national and regional bodies, and he has research experience in European regional innovation policy, innovative clusters, innovation management, university engagement with business and communities, urban competitiveness and processes of inter-organisational learning within cities.
In EPRC, David will be contributing to ongoing work on European regional development and policy, and developing new strands of research on innovation policy, the role of universities in regional development and science-based city development strategies.
