EPRC is offering a three-year full-time PhD studentship to investigate the effects of politicisation on EU Cohesion policy in Central and Eastern Europe. The relationship between civil servants and politicians is a central issue in contemporary governance. The personality and commitment of politicians can strengthen accountability and introduce dynamic leadership. However, political considerations can also substitute for impartial, merit-based criteria in policy implementation. Research to date has explored why politicisation happens, as well as the politicisation of public appointments and policy-making. This PhD will analyse the politicisation of policy implementation and outcomes, focusing on EU Cohesion policy in Central and Eastern Europe. The PhD award will cover fees (up to the home/EU rate only) and a full RCUK stipend of approximately £14,000 per year for 3 years. Further information on how to apply is available here. Closing date 16 October 2015.
