EPRC lent its support to a two day conference on Scotland and the new EU. The conference was part of a series of 'Futures of Europe' events and aimed to stimulate debate on Scotland's place in the New Europe prior to EU enlargement on 1 May 2004. Contributions came from politicians, policy-makers, media commentators, academics and business representatives form Scotland and from the EU's new member states. Professor John Bachtler chaired a session on Economics and Enlargement, which considered key questions such as has Scotland done enough to benefit from growth in the new Member States and 'connect' with the New Europe? Contributions in this session came from Charlie Morrison, IBM Europe, Campbell Christie, former General Secretary of the STUC, Bob Downes, Director BT Scotland, Iain McTaggart, the Scottish Council for Development and Industry and Alf Young, the Herald. <p>
