The seminar presentation assessed how far EU Member States, and the EU itself, will need to adjust their strategic focus in light of competition from the rest of the world and the move away from wage competition towards higher value-added, knowledge-based products and services. It concluded by sketching out what these considerations imply for the EU budget, specifically focusing on research, competitiveness and cohesion funding.
