His presentation 'Europe: The State of the Union' discussed the current state of European integration and the different directions that the EU might take based on his recent book on the subject. He considered the paradox of integration, the fragility of the Union and took a closer look at the EU's role in the market and beyond the market. His conclusion was that the Union is unloved and operates with dysfunctional institutions under major constraints from national politics, yet it has recorded major achievements with an influence that extends well beyond the boundaries of Europe.
The presentation was based on Anand Menon's book 'Europe: The State of the Union', Atlantic Books, 2008.
