On 26 March, EPRC hosted a seminar by Dr Paul McAleavey from the European Environment Agency as part of the EPRC European Policy Seminar Series. Paul McAleavey's presentation 'Climate change: the consequences for policy-makers' discussed how climate change adaptation is rising up the political agenda and the consequences this has for policymakers at the European level and in the Member States. The public debate on climate change often addresses competing scientific claims or the politics of international negotiations on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, policymakers in Europe are already focusing on the reality of adaptation to the impacts of climate change. Paul McAleavey also discussed the Scotland Government's strategy for mitigation and adaptation to climate change, noting that Scotland was one of the leading countries in Europe in terms of targets and strategic approach.
