The preparation for the next EU Multiannual Financial Framework for the post-2020 period is taking place in a difficult context, with the pressures of Brexit, and the economic, migration and security crises affecting the EU and its Member States.
As in previous reforms, the share of the EU budget allocated to Cohesion policy is under scrutiny, partly because of other priorities such as climate change, but also because of demands to strengthen EU economic governance and link EU funding to structural reforms.
Prof John Bachtler reviewed the state-of-play of the debate on the future of Cohesion policy and its possible evolution.
