On Tuesday 16 September, Laura Polverari gave a lecture at the International University Menendez Pelayo of Valencia (Spain) on 'The territorial dimension of economic and social cohesion: regional policy and Spatial planning in Europe'. The lecture was part of a summer school on 'The government of the territories' organised by the International University Menendez Pelayo under the direction of Prof. Joan Romero Gonzalez and Prof. Joaquin Farinos Dasi'. The school aimed to introduce students and practitioners to the new concept of territorial development planning, by exploring themes such as: the emergence of a new European spatial culture; the new vision of the European space; and, the experiences of various EU Member States in the field of spatial planning. Laura's presentation investigated the interrelations existing between European regional policy and the emerging European spatial policy agenda (as outlined in the ESDP and in the more recent debate on Territorial Cohesion), to address the crucial question of whether European policies for economic and social cohesion contribute to the objectives of the European spatial policy agenda and in which way. The presentation concluded by highlighting some considerations on the future of European structural and cohesion policy and on how this could more effectively reflect spatial concerns.
