How do regional development challenges and regional policy responses compare across Europe?

EPRC research involves the comparative study of regional development problems and disparities across Europe, and understanding the differences in regional policy responses across countries, regions and jurisdictions. Of particular interest are issues of policy design – the formulation of policy objectives, choice of policy instruments and modes of governance – and experiences with implementing policy in practice at different spatial scales. The research also involves evaluating regional policies and gaining insights into ‘what works’ in different policy contexts.

Central to this theme is the European Regional Policy Research Consortium (EoRPA), a long-running programme funded by government departments in 11 European countries. EoRPA involves the monitoring and comparative assessment of regional policies in 30 European countries, and the provision of policy advice on regional policy issues. It also involves studying the interaction between national regional policies and EU Cohesion policy and EU Competition policy control of State aid.
