EU Cohesion policy: Analysing the operation and effectiveness of European Structural and Investment Funds

EPRC research has focused on the study of EU Cohesion policy for over two decades, with three distinct strands. First, the Centre undertakes research on the reform of Cohesion policy, as part of the EU Multiannual Financial Framework. Studies focus on the dynamics of the reform process and negotiations in Council formations and in the European Parliament, the modelling of the EU budget, and the provision of policy advice on reform options.

Second, the Centre undertakes comparative research on the implementation of Structural Funds. Much of this research is conducted within the framework of IQ-Net (Improving the Quality of Structural Funds Programme Management), a long-term research and knowledge exchange programme comparing how the implementation of ERDF and ESF programmes operates in different countries and regions.

Third, the Centre is engaged in the evaluation of EU Cohesion policy programmes, across the wide variety of intervention and policy processes that characterise it, involving ex ante, interim, ex post and thematic evaluation studies.
